Spring Skiing Tips: What to Pack

Mar 15, 2024 | Spring Skiing

Nothing’s better in New England than a day of spring skiing. As the days heat up and get longer, it’s important to know what to pack and expect for a day of spring skiing. Luckily for you, we’ve compiled our top tips for anyone looking to hit the slopes before the season ends – whether it’s your first time or your 100th run, you should always pack these essentials.

Layers, Layers, Layers!
This time of year, the temperature can go from 30s in the morning to high 50s during the day, then drop right back down in the evening. Because of this, it’s incredibly important to wear layers during spring skiing sessions. Start with a moisture wicking base layer, Helly Hansen makes a great long-sleeve base layer that comes in both black and white. Opting for a moisture wicking base layer will help you stay dry and warm no matter what temperature. Being long sleeved, it also helps shield you from the sun, which is harsher during the spring months than it is in the winter.

Over your base layers, you should wear snow pants and a snow jacket that are water resistant, such as the Under Armour Storm Powerline Insulated Jacket. The Powerline jacket is 100% waterproof and windproof, while still being breathable – and the hood is helmet compatible to ensure a safe and secure trip down the mountain.

To accommodate the changes in weather throughout the day, be sure to pack a light fleece layer as well in case you get too warm during your spring skiing session. Patagonia makes some wonderful fleece layers, including the women’s Better Sweater Fleece Jacket. This creates a barrier between your base layer and the elements to keep you dry, cozy and warm.

In the event of unexpected cold fronts, you can also wear all three layers to stay extra warm. Other layers to consider include:

  • Wool socks (and a spare pair!)
  • Snow gloves
  • Hat or beanie
  • Sunglasses

Safety First!

Two of the most important pieces of equipment for spring skiing include your helmet and your goggles! Wearing a helmet protects your head in the event of a fall or crash. On runs where there is hard packed ice or hidden rocks and branches, a helmet can turn a critical fall into just a minor stumble.
Goggles are equally important to protect your eyes from the sun as well as any snow or debris that could be flying around while you make your way down the slope. Choose a pair of goggles that have 100% UV protection, such as Electric’s Kleveland style. The UV rays reflect off the bright white snow, so wearing UV goggles will ensure you can see the trail without damaging your vision.

When you don’t have your goggles on, you should be wearing UV sunglasses like the Oakley Standard Issue Split Shot style. Taking proper precautions ensures you don’t damage your eyes or your head during your runs!

On the topic of sun protection, the chilly breeze won’t save you from its glare, so make sure you’re armed with sunscreen and protective gear in addition to your goggles. Be sure to cover any exposed skin with a powerful sunscreen and remember to reapply throughout the day! For added defense, pack some SPF-infused lip balm to keep your skin safe and sound.
