5 Winter Essentials to Pack for a Day on the Slopes

Feb 5, 2024 | Winter

The snow is fresh, the lifts are going, and spirits are high – make sure you’re ready for a day on the slopes by packing all the winter essentials you’ll need. Whether you’re snowboarding, skiing, or even sledding, with Benson Ski & Sport, you can find everything you need to have fun in the snow while staying warm and prepared for the winter elements.

Be Prepared for the Weather
These items are recommended in addition to the attire you are already wearing, which should include base layers, snow pants, a snow jacket, thick wool socks, gloves, and a ski mask or hat of some sort. At the top of the mountain, the weather can change in an instant, and you need to be prepared for extreme temperatures. The sun is not the only element to worry about when it comes to the weather. The cold, wind, and potential snowfall can happen in an instant, which is why you need to be prepared with winter layers to bundle up. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry while you’re out on the slopes. Some key items to bring include:

  • Fleece layers
  • Extra socks
  • Glove liners or extra gloves
  • Beanie or hat

Never Lose Your Bearings
Whether you’re an avid outdoors adventurer or an amateur explorer, you should always take a map with you. Physical maps are ultra-reliable because they do not require internet or cellular connection to be used, which is necessary for remote slopes that do not receive enough cell service to download digital maps. For skiing and snowboarding, you need to have both a map of the mountain or general region as well as a map of the resort itself. This way, you can locate different runs and determine which ones are best for your skill level while also being aware of your surroundings beyond the slopes. Speaking of documents and references, you should also pack proper identification and money. Most resorts accept cards these days, but it’s always good to have extra cash on hand in the event of an emergency.

Fun in the Sun: Cover Up!
Just because the temperature is low, the risk of sun exposure is still present, which is why you have to be prepared to slap on the sunscreen and cover up. In fact, the reflection of the sun on the bright snow makes its impact that much stronger. Sunscreen is essential, and so are sunglasses. Even though you’ll be wearing your goggles during the action, sunglasses will protect your eyes when you’re going to and from the slopes or taking a break. While you are on the slopes, it’s incredibly important that you also have UV goggles to protect your eyes. It is also recommended that you bring lip balm with SPF in it in addition to regular sunscreen to protect your vulnerable skin.

Don’t Run Out of Fuel
Winter sports are hard work, so make sure you stay fueled up and hydrated. Make sure you pack a refillable water bottle that holds a significant amount of water to ensure you never run out. It is also a good rule of thumb to pack something non-perishable but still substantial, such as granola or protein bars. Although many resorts have snack bars or stores to purchase food from, it is always best to be prepared from the start.

Pick Your Pack
Now that you know what you need to hit the slopes, it’s time to pack it all up. You are going to want to find a day pack that will hold your slope essentials. To keep all of your winter essentials organized, opt for a day pack that has multiple compartments while still having a slim, comfortable design so it’s comfortable to wear while you’re in action. Two key features to look for in a skiing/snowboarding day pack are adjustable sternum straps and a waist or hip belt. This helps balance the weight of the pack so it is not solely on your shoulders. Similarly, padded or ergonomic shoulder straps are also recommended for optimal comfort. This will help ensure your pack stays secure all day – even on those black diamond runs!

Hit the Slopes
Once you have your daypack prepared and ready to go, you’re ready to head up the mountain with peace of mind. Whether it’s your first day on the mountain or your hundredth, packing these winter essentials will help you get the most out of your day on the slopes. Take on those new runs with peace of mind.
